Company Collaborating with Universities and the Kaoshih Indigenous Community to Restore the Endangered Taiwanese White Phalaenopsis Orchid

PANJIT International Inc. (PANJIT) officially launched its 2026 ESG initiative on January 24, 2026. With professional guidance and coordination from Professor Mei-Hui Chen and her team from the Department of Forestry at National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, PANJIT employees traveled to the 「Kaoshih」 Indigenous Community in Mudan Township, Pingtung County, to take part in a restoration program for the endangered Taiwanese white Phalaenopsis orchid. The initiative was combined with an immersive ecotourism experience, marking the starting point of PANJIT’s 2026 ESG action plan.

This initiative brought together employees who had actively participated in the company’s ESG programs throughout 2025 and met the eligibility criteria. By stepping into the forest and experiencing daily life in the indigenous community, participants deepened their understanding of biodiversity conservation, environmental sustainability, and the shared value of community coexistence.
The Taiwanese white Phalaenopsis orchid, affectionately known as “Taiwan Grandma,” has become critically endangered due to habitat destruction and is listed as a Nationally Critically Endangered (NCR) species in the Red List of Vascular Plants of Taiwan. Under Professor Chen’s long-term University Social Responsibility (USR) program, the species was successfully reintroduced in 2024 to one of its native habitats—the Kaoshih community. Through corporate participation and hands-on employee involvement, PANJIT transformed biodiversity conservation from a concept into tangible action.

From an Environmental perspective, the activity was supported by a professional team that provided restored orchid seedlings and guided participants through the planting process in the forest. Each employee planted one orchid on behalf of the Kaoshih community, directly contributing to ecological conservation. Despite forecasts predicting a high chance of rain, the weather remained cool and stable, allowing the entire program to proceed smoothly.

On the Social front, the event highlighted the collaborative achievements of industry, academia, and the indigenous community. Members of the Kaoshih community organized cultural tours and hands-on experiences, including visits to the Kaoshih Shrine, a traditional fire-crossing blessing ceremony, and activities related to understory economy practices, home gardens, wild vegetable foraging, and log-grown shiitake mushroom cultivation. These experiences enabled participants to gain deeper insights into the life, culture, and sustainable wisdom of the Southern Paiwan people.

PANJIT stated that ESG initiatives grounded in education and real-world action allow corporate sustainability to go beyond pledges and be translated into long-term, actionable impact. Looking ahead, the company will continue to place ESG at the core of its strategy, further strengthening industry–academia collaboration and local engagement. Through these efforts, PANJIT aims to deliver meaningful sustainability initiatives that support biodiversity conservation, regional development, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
